Game Management: Other Issues

Unfortunately, there are rare occasions when referees are not only required to manage a contest according to the Laws of the Game, but to apply - with the assistance of coaches and field marshals (when present) - policies designed to address inappropriate behavior.

The LCYSA Zero Tolerance Policy addresses "behavior that creates or promotes a hostile, threatening, insulting, intimidating, degrading or otherwise negative environment for any participant in any LCYS event.

The NMYSA Referee Respect and Zero Tolerance for Inappropriate Behavior Towards Referees Policy is intended to eliminate "the abuse that they are subjected to by coaches, players, and sidelines."

Referees must:

  • "Behave in a professional manner that promotes fair play and strong competition in a positive sportsmanlike atmosphere" (LCYSA Policy).

  • Read and understand these two policy statements. We recommend that you print copies to keep in your referee bag. Inappropriate behavior as defined by these documents must be addressed accordance with the LCSRA Policy. It must be documented in your game report AND reported to assignor, Dreaux Plair, immediately - and no later than 24 hours after the incident.

  • Support fellow referees - especially youth referees - when inappropriate behavior occurs.
